Solar Eclipses Viewed From Space

Earth Observatory - Eclipse Shadows Southeastern China July 23, 2009: "The Moon's shadow engulfed Taiwan and a large swath of southeastern China and the Pacific Ocean on the morning of July 22, 2009, during an unusually long total eclipse of the Sun. ..."
This image was produced from data from EUMETSAT's Meteosat-7 satellite which is located over the Indian Ocean, received over EUMETCast by my MSG Data Manager, with the false-colour combination produced by my GeoSatSignal-7 software combining both visible-channel and thermal-channel data from the satellite. Earth Observatory - Total Solar Eclipse of March 29, 2006: "The International Space Station (ISS) was in position to view the umbral (ground) shadow cast by the Moon as it moved between the Sun and the Earth during the solar eclipse on March 29, 2006. This astronaut image captures the umbral shadow across southern Turkey, northern Cyprus, and the Mediterranean Sea..."

NASA/GSFC/Aqua/Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Rapid Response Team: Total solar eclipse over Antarctica...

ISS012-E-21343 (29 Mar. 2006) --- The shadow of the moon falls on Earth as seen from the International Space Station, 230 miles above the planet, during a total solar eclipse at about 4:50 a.m. CST Wednesday, March 29. This digital photo was taken by the Expedition 12 crew, Commander Bill McArthur and Flight Engineer Valery Tokarev, who are wrapping up a six-month mission on the complex. Visible near the shadow are portions of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea and the coast of Turkey.
APOD - August 30, 1999: "Here is what the Earth looks like during a solar eclipse. The shadow of the Moon can be seen darkening part of Earth. This shadow moves across the Earth at nearly 2000 kilometers per hour. Only observers near the center of the dark circle see a total solar eclipse - others see a partial eclipse where only part of the Sun appears blocked by the Moon. This spectacular picture of the 1999 August 11 solar eclipse was one of the last ever taken from the Mir space station, as Mir is being decommissioned after more than ten years of productive use."

  11. For the people who think these are altered or shopped images, what makes you think so? Are you disputing eclipses? Do you think the world is flat? What is it that makes you believe these are anything other than what they represent?

  12. Killer pics! And to the god lover. Why don't you grow up and stop believing in farie tails? I am refering to the Easter Bunny, Santa, and God. God isn't real sorry to be the one to break the news to you.

Wow... "Not even the most screwy right wing christian dolts dispute lunar eclipses."

Are you trying to prove something by throwing a half witted statement like that into a comment thread? It's entirely irrelevant and childish.

I suppose you were asking for an anti-God discussion to commence, huh?

And Anonymous July 24, 2009 12:47 PM, I completely agree.

Although internet Evangelism rarely works, I agree.

I feel bad for the people who take the beauty of this earth for granted. It's not just a lunar eclipse. It's a unique occurance. I feel bad for jaded people.

    God bless,

  14. Just looks like a shadow to me, I assume made by the moon because it got between the Earth and the sun. That's what happens when something that light won't go through gets between a light source and another object.

    ReplyDelete
  15. What amazes me even more than the unique pictures of the eclipse, which give us a different perspective of this rare event, is that many of us still haven't learned to get along and are content to languish in our own ignorance. Open your eyes, your ears, your minds; and stop your childlike squabbles. Perhaps .. there will come a day .. when we, as a people, after all these millennium, can act our age. But that's just me.
    - sorry to digress but it had to be said.

  16. we all have different personalities so..let it be, im sure we all lash out at things we feel strongly against all the time. some confuse passion for anger. anyway...this is pretty awesome. I was thinking though, you would think that the shadow would be more crisp since the moon is much much closer to earth than it is to the sun. Yeah, the moon is still pretty far away but not compared to our distance from the sun..? i love how the earth is glowing in the last picture..phenomenol

The pictures are breathtaking...Not only because the eclipse, also to see the ground that you are standing is challenging. There is nothing to do with religion. just relax and enjoy your nature...What if we could never see where we are standing...Brain is the problem. What you had been memorized is the problem...

  49. It's sad that people can't enjoy a simple picture without bringing up "photoshop".
To atheists and Christians alike, you both need to chill.
Christians: Don't you think you are being hypocritical by bashing the atheists? You are supposed to love all people. Let them believe what they want to believe. You aren't going to convert them by doing that.

I say that as a Christian too.

Anyways, the main point of this page is to appreciate how beautiful the Earth is, God or not. I wish I could go into space and see it for myself...

  50. It is really neat to see these pictures right from the computer!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. And God saw that those who were allowed to see the shadow of the eclipse fell to squabbling and bickering amongst themselves. Some said, "
Lo, this is but a Photoshop image and not worthy of our praise." And others were heard to say, "Thou hast abused the name of the deity here!" Seeing that they did not admire his handiwork, God tired of their petty whining and decided to smite them.

Also, i read all thse freaking comments and I am ashamed of whet my sociaty has beciome. Yes, the world is filled with many different people, but for goodness sakes, can't you just keep the comments to yourself? If you want to argue about something, leave, and if you want to share your opinion which no one cares about, feel free to do so, but please do not start that religion crap or anything else just to argue, we don't want a war to start, now do we? if you want to start a war, ou an continue the one current in Iraq, or maybe korea? i siply do not care about what the hell happens after this comment, since i do not care about this website. people also love arguing for some reason, that's ok, just PLEASE not something you could kill someone over! if you don't like this comment, then fine. I have not commented on anyone's, hopefully that will be a good example for the stupid peole of sociaty like SOME of you. by the way, i do not support any religions whatsoever, i do not take sides, and i did not take these pictures. hopefully some of you will stfu and gtfo, and i will never come back to this site. disgrace, absolute disgrace. oh, by the way, "Godisgay"? please, get a life and die in a hole. fine, your opinion is god is gay, but i feel you have offended many. change the name. 61. Wow, these pictures are simply brilliant. Great stuff.

And for the whole Christain/Atheiest bit: Let it the hell go! Arguing over beliefs that deep-seated is nothing more than a pointless waste of energy, especially when done in comment thread.

    Oh and one more thing:
    Laciate ogne Speranza, Voi Chintrata.

If you don't know what that means, you don't get to tell anyone to "rot in hell", even discussing hell is kind of questionable.

    ReplyDelete
  62. wow ive always wondered what an eclipse looked like from space. the pics were awesome

    ReplyDelete
  63. so let me get this straight, a picture cant be taken from space unless it has been photoshopped? just like man didnt walk on the moon. please. man was on the moon and, as far as the whole christian/ athiest thing grow up people who cares what religion you are. enjoy the damned ol pics. photoshopped or not there good pics!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ordinarily I wouldn't bother with the likes of this kind of venue. Mostly, because I am not a blogger, but moreover because I really do believe that more often than not, based on the level of insight displayed here, that is a waste of time.
But...... something in the above comments seems to warrant more than just a smart retort!!! I happen to be a believer,(in God that is),.. but I'm not into cultivating a synthetically manufactured personality of religiosity for the sake of on-looking mankind.
Hence, I do have many problems with "religion", in many of it's contexts.
That however doesn't negate the fact that we didn't just pop into existence as if some scientific cataclysmic happening occured from out of nowhere! The majesty and the order you see in these beautiful and magnificent pictures is ordered of God, and it is referred to as "nature", which is scientific of course, but which eminates from Him.
And for those who choose to disavow His existence, Well the only thing I should like to say to that, is that the person above is right, that's what happens when something that the light of God won't go through, (that would be you), get's between the source of that light, and it's intended destination, (that would be your darkened mind), and those of course who already have a deep and abiding appreciation for it. And the shadow you cast as a result, could never be said to have come from photoshop.

    ReplyDelete
  65. you guys complain to much they are noet photoshopped everyone says tat about every pic on the internet and whether god is real or not has nothing to do with an eclipse you guys try to act all official and bibl;ical shut the fuck up your bickering makes as much sense as your stupid faces

    ReplyDelete
  66. I just want to remind everyone that when people make comments like "shopped!" they are just trying to start arguments. They don't really believe the photos were shopped. It's called trolling and you all fell for it.

    ReplyDelete
  67. "get a life and die in a hole" LMFAO!!!! I want to thank every one of you A-holes for enriching the entertainment value of this website!! You all rock in your own way!

    ReplyDelete
  68. OMNEG! These pix are cool! The comments... not so much.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Okay. Im sitting here reading all of these comments, and even IM getting angry. Here is what I have to say, and even though most of you dont care, keep an open mind that I have read ALL the comments, and I agree and dissagree with all of them. No matter what side youre on, or what your opinion is, please, listen to what i have to say.

Christians(or to others, bible thumpers, God freaks, etc.): These pictures ARE amazing! I agree, and nobody is saying they arent.(the people who are convinced these are photoshopped didnt say they looked bad. :) But honestly, just because you are religious, does not mean you are right and everyone else is wrong forever. You can believe in whatever you want to believe, nobody is stopping you, but it IS hypocritical that you think others are wrong for THEIR beleifs. Signifying that most Christians think they are right and everyone else is wrong. My advice to you: Stop trying to convert people, you'll spend youre entire life fighting. and it will get you absolutely NOWHERE. All it will do, is create a worse name for Christians. You may not know it, you may, but most people call you the Most hypocritical, Controlling, psychopathic conformists in the world.. When you think about it, youre against Muslims, and Iraquis ( either because you think theyre wrong or because they attacked us, I'm American) but theyre doing nothing different than what youre doing, only on a bigger scale. They beleive that everyone who isnt whatever religion Iraquis are, then they should be destroyed and go to hell. All I'm saying is that though is seems like youre the good people, you're the ones that arent keeping an open mind about life and things. You believe what a book tells you to. I find that people who dont neccisarily believe in an organized religion, tend to keep an open mind.

Athiests(or to others, Satanists, going to hell, asshole, etc.) You may not believe in God, or Jesus or anything, but just as I told the Christians, youre not going to prove anything by pissing people off. Im not talking to in a respectful way at all, i know, but thats because one, you guys are some of the least respective people on Earth, two, youre all probably under the age of 25 anyway, and i figure, the quickest way to get to you, is probably not to talk like a Christian. I myself, believe that we're all going to rot in the ground after death. thats it. Even if someone else believes that there is an afterlife, or a higher power, no matter who that is, theyre still trying to better themselves, so if they wanna live a non chaotic life then let them. its their choice. meanwhile, youre probably a bitter teenager with anger problems that wrecks havoc on others everywhere you go. including a blog post about lunar freaking eclipse.

you probably go around pissing people off dont you?
you give teenagers and atheists their bad name.

i know you know the steriotypes.

My name is Christina. I'm 15 years old. If i can sit here and see the bad and good in people, no matter who they are, why the HELL cant everyone else?

like I said, My belief as a person is that when we die, we either get burned to ashes or rot in the ground. No afterlife, no heaven, no hell,

NO reason to take life for granted.

im gunna go smoke some weed.

  70. Just a quick note to Christina, it was a SOLAR freaking eclipse - not a Lunar freaking eclipse.

And who really cares anyways. people believe, it's a fact. And different people believe different things. And to christina, i liked the post, I'm 15 too and completely agree. although I'm agnostic. for those of you who surprisingly don't know what that means, it means that I really don't have an opinion. I just want to watch you foos fight, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  74. ya know? I think this is very beautifal:) As for all the chaos on this page. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and views on the subject. All I can say is...whatever comes from this event is either going to happen or its not. One of the two. There shouldn't be any reason to sit there and worry about what is to come of it. Thats a waste of life. Just go with the flow. You can't stop mother nature. But according to al gore you can make it worse haha. Whatever.

  75. everyone has their own opinion, i like the picture, and that's my opinion :)

    what's yours?

    ReplyDelete
  76. also i do not think the picture was changed and done in photoshop, that's my opinion too. people that argue it was are probably just amazed by the picture, and maybe thay're impressed with our world and they can't take it all in, so they write that it is fake. this is also my opinion. i am most likely wrong, because i do not think this was done in photoshop :) but also, the last person to say that was about, 30 some odd comments ago? and we've been critisizing them all along, but who knows? maybe i'm wrong. maybe it was done in photoshop. maybe WE'RE wrong. please, enjoy the picture, needless to say that indeed it is beautiful, and if it WAS done in photoshop, bravo, because the artist sure did one hell of a job! beutiful picture, and i hope that other people won't be so ignorant, and chill out, drop it, and be amazed with the wonderful world we live on!!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. oh christina...you have much more life to live before you can go sharing your little opinion. teenagers have so much to say..opinionated as hell. atheists dont necessarily believe in the devil and worship him and all that junk...Atheism basically means that we dont believe in god...like you...you believe were going to rot in the ground..so, youre technically an atheist. I'm aware that this entire blog has been shifted to a lame religious chat/quarrel but christina really pissed me off... Granted I dont know much about religion because i think it's a giant cult started long long ago that cought on and spanned and changed to other beliefs but....you're a naive teenager who needs to shut the fuck up and go exercise cuz you're probably obese like the rest of the world under the age of .......i was gana say a low number but...older people are obese too..gross....

    ReplyDelete
  82. Adults are as much opinionated as teenagers or any age. I have seen and experienced many adults who believed I was an ignorant and simple minded little kid just because I'm a teenager. Granted that some teenagers are not the brightest tool in the shed but I just hate it when people lump everyone in a single group. So try to be a bit more understanding and less opinionated about people before coming on the internet and making an ass of yourself. I'm 16 and I could just go on and on on your post but I have better things to do so good day.

  87. I am an atheist, but believe in religious freedom. I don't like it when people are forced into religion such as children growing up in a religious family. The most annoying thing, however, is when religious people knock science in an attempt to support their god. These pictures, this forum, most of the food that our world of 6.5 billion people eat, etc... are brought to you by Science. Take note of what that 16yo kid that posted August 9, 2009 10:05PM said. He's wiser than most.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I personally find it hilarious (and worrying) that Christina, who is 15, is more grown up and intelligent than most of the "adults" who have posted on this site.

Can anybody give me one good reason why everybody shouldnt just get along? ... honestly! Because i cant think of one! I am personally an atheist, this does not mean i have not thought about the possibility of the existence of some sort of higher deity it is merely my personal opinion. My best friend throughout my life is a christian. These are his beliefs and i respect them. We can get along fine so why cant you?

Furthermore i would like to say that EVERYBODY is entitled to their opinion regardless of Age, Sex, Race, Religion, Disability or anything else. At the end of the day if we are truly going to attack anyone that is different to ourselves then all we are going to acheive is the complete destruction of the human race as, last i heard, WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT!

These pictures serve to highlight the wondrous beauty of the world we live on. It doesnt matter how it came to exist, it does. ENJOY IT, APPRECIATE IT, LOVE IT. And do the same to each other. You never know, one day we might make the world a better place for everyone.

    Finally,
Nice work Photographer :) really beautiful stuff. And for those claiming the shadow is the wrong shape etc, have you considered the shape of the earth? just a thought.

    Keep smiling :)
